What is dutasteride and how is it different from finasteride?
Both finasteride and dutasteride block DHT, the hormone responsible for male pattern hair loss. Dutasteride blocks both pathways that produce DHT while finasteride blocks only one, resulting in more complete DHT suppression. Clinical studies show dutasteride produces greater hair count improvement than finasteride. It is prescribed off-label for hair loss — it is not FDA-approved for AGA but is well-supported by clinical research. Which medication is right for you depends on your history and clinical picture.
What causes male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern baldness is caused by sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone. Over time DHT causes hair follicles to miniaturize and eventually stop producing hair. It's genetic, progressive, and hormone-driven — which is why medications that block DHT are effective.
When should I start treatment?
As soon as you notice changes. Treatment is significantly more effective at preserving hair you have than recovering hair you've already lost. If you're asking whether it's too early — it isn't.
How long does finasteride take to work?
Most men see stabilization within 3 to 6 months. Visible regrowth, if it happens, typically takes closer to 12 months. The earlier you start the better your results.
Do I need labs before starting?
Not typically for finasteride. Your intake form collects the information I need to make a clinical decision.
